Today, several women came forward with allegations of rape and sexual misconduct against Re. Eric Swalwell.

I’d like everyone to remember that it is not easy to come forward about sexual abuse. And that women don’t often do things just for themselves. We do things because we believe something far greater than us is at risk if we don’t.

With that in mind, please don’t get starstruck over Rep. Swalwell. I don’t know the motivations of the women who have come forward with their story, but my heart goes out to them, it could not have been easy. I worked in a political environment my whole adult life. I know what it’s like to be around people who are revered and idolized. There is something very disorienting about it. There is a power dynamic that nothing in your life prepares you for, no matter what side of that dynamic you’re on. And because I was on the subordinate side of that dynamic, I was keenly aware of what could happen if I upset it. I would be the one to suffer, no matter how right I was.

As for Rep. Swalwell, despite the veracity of the allegations, out of respect for our institutions and for the offices of Governor and Member of Congress, and for the women who have come forward, he should withdraw from the race for Governor and resign as congressman. If he intends to fight, he should do so privately. We deserve - and really need right now - a Governor or a congressman who is focused on us and not exonerating himself.
