Many pictures stick with me from the January 6, 2021 attack on the US capitol, but the picture of Rep. Kim helping staff clean up is the one I remember most.
Public service is just that, service. I don't know Rep. Kim's politics, and this isn't a post about what I think of him. This post is to say that January 6 was a reminder that all the partisan and political rhetoric does manifest itself into action, for good or for bad. That those who worked at the capitol - elected and non-elected alike - spent a day terrified for their lives, yet some still grabbed a garbage bag and started cleaning up.
I was ashamed for the country that day, but my pride in these folks eclipsed that shame. We are wonderful country, filled with good, kind, and hard working people. This gentle picture from a not so gentle day, is a reminder of that.
The violence will stick with me forever, as I imagine it has stuck with you, too. But please let the acts of service from that day stick with you, too. Many people, from staffers to law enforcement, sacrificed a lot that day, some their lives. Their work deserves to be remembered.
